Types of Turbochargers: FGT, WGT and VGT Explained.

Learn how FGT, WGT and VGT turbochargers work, understand their structural differences and explore their applications with real FIRE TURBO product examples.

Why Are There Different Types of Turbochargers?

A turbocharger uses exhaust gas energy to drive a turbine wheel, which is connected to a compressor wheel through a shaft. As the compressor rotates, it draws in and compresses fresh air before delivering it to the engine.

However, not all turbochargers use the same design. Different technologies control exhaust gas flow in different ways, affecting boost pressure, engine response and performance under different operating conditions.

Three common types are Fixed Geometry Turbochargers (FGT), Wastegate Turbochargers (WGT) and Variable Geometry Turbochargers (VGT).

Understanding their differences can help wholesalers, distributors and aftermarket professionals identify the correct turbocharger for specific engine applications.

1. FGT – Fixed Geometry Turbocharger

A Fixed Geometry Turbocharger uses a turbine housing with a fixed exhaust passage geometry. The size and shape of the turbine housing and turbine wheel are designed to match the engine's operating requirements.

During operation, exhaust gas flows through the turbine housing and drives the turbine wheel. Unlike a VGT, the exhaust passage geometry does not continuously change to adapt to different engine speeds.

Key Characteristics:

  • Simple and robust structural design.

  • Fixed turbine passage geometry.

  • Designed to match specific engine operating conditions.

  • Commonly used in industrial, agricultural and commercial engine applications.

FGT designs are valued for their relatively straightforward construction and established technology. Their performance depends heavily on matching the turbocharger specifications to the engine.

2. WGT – Wastegate Turbocharger

A Wastegate Turbocharger uses a fixed-geometry turbine design with an additional wastegate valve to regulate exhaust gas flow.

When boost pressure approaches its control target, the wastegate valve opens. A portion of the exhaust gas bypasses the turbine wheel and flows directly into the exhaust outlet.

By controlling how much exhaust gas passes through the turbine wheel, the wastegate helps regulate turbocharger speed and boost pressure.

Key Characteristics:

  • Fixed turbine geometry with a wastegate valve.

  • Controls boost pressure by bypassing part of the exhaust gas.

  • Helps prevent excessive turbocharger speed and boost pressure.

  • Commonly used in passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and other engine applications.

Compared with a basic fixed-geometry design without a wastegate, the WGT adds a mechanism for controlling exhaust flow. This provides greater flexibility in managing boost pressure under different engine operating conditions.

3. VGT – Variable Geometry Turbocharger

A Variable Geometry Turbocharger uses adjustable vanes inside the turbine housing to change the effective exhaust gas passage area before the gas reaches the turbine wheel.

neueste Unternehmensnachrichten über Types of Turbochargers: FGT, WGT and VGT Explained. 4

At lower engine speeds, the vanes can move to a position that narrows the exhaust passage. This increases exhaust gas velocity and helps the turbine respond more effectively.

neueste Unternehmensnachrichten über Types of Turbochargers: FGT, WGT and VGT Explained. 5

At higher engine speeds, the vanes adjust to provide a larger passage area, allowing more exhaust gas to flow through the turbine.

By continuously adjusting the vane position, a VGT can adapt to changing engine speeds and loads more effectively than a conventional fixed-geometry design.

Key Characteristics:

  • Adjustable turbine vanes.

  • Variable exhaust passage area.

  • Improved control of exhaust gas flow across different engine speeds.

  • Supports engine performance under a wider range of operating conditions.

  • More complex structure and control system than conventional fixed-geometry designs.

VGT technology is commonly used in modern diesel engines and selected passenger vehicle applications where flexible boost control is required.

4. FGT vs. WGT vs. VGT: What Are the Differences?

The main difference between these three turbocharger technologies lies in how they control exhaust gas flow before it reaches the turbine wheel.

Feature FGT WGT VGT
Full name Fixed Geometry Wastegate Variable Geometry
Turbine passage Fixed Fixed Adjustable
Main control method Fixed design Wastegate valve Adjustable vanes
Exhaust bypass No integrated bypass in basic design Yes Usually not required
Structural complexity Relatively simple Moderate More complex
Boost control flexibility Limited Wastegate-controlled More adaptable

Note: FGT in this comparison refers to a basic fixed-geometry design without an integrated wastegate. WGT is also based on fixed turbine geometry, but adds a wastegate valve.

5. How to Choose the Right Turbocharger?

Different turbocharger designs are developed for different engine requirements. There is no single turbocharger type that is suitable for every application.

When selecting a replacement turbocharger, buyers and distributors should pay attention to the following information:

  • 1. Turbocharger Model

Check the original turbocharger model and its identification plate.

  • 2. Part Number and OE Number

Cross-reference the part number or OE number to help identify the correct replacement.

  • 3. Engine Model

Confirm the engine model, displacement and relevant specifications.

  • 4. Vehicle or Equipment Application

Check the vehicle brand, model, production year and application type.

  • 5. Turbocharger Structure

Confirm whether the original unit uses FGT, WGT or VGT technology. For VGT units, the actuator and control system must also be compatible with the application.

For wholesalers and aftermarket suppliers, accurate model matching is especially important when purchasing multiple turbocharger models for stock replenishment.
